The role of UPDF in establishing peace and stability in the Great Lakes Region
Abstract
The study focused on the Uganda’s involvement in the stabilisation of the Great Lakes region through the interventions of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces in countries like South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Burundi, and Somalia among other countries. The study examined the role of UPDF in establishing peace and stability in the Great Lakes region, analysed the forms and nature of its interventions in the armed conflicts in there, and examined the civil-military relations between the UPDF and the civilians in stabilising the region. The findings of the study found out that UPDF has been fundamental in establishing stability in the great Lakes Region through its interventions in the conflicts like in those communities. The study was basically a library-based research. It concluded that the UPDF involvement were very crucial in the Great Lakes Region. The study recommended to establish peace and stability, there was need to address the root causes of the conflicts rather than just waiting to intervene later in the conflicts have flared up. The other countries should assist the UPDF in a more integrated way in those areas to resolve their problems amicably.
