| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of the Nambi Sseppuuya Community Resource Centre to the development of a reading culture in the community. The specific objectives of the study were to: identify mobile library services that are provided; establish how the mobile library services that are provided in promoting a reading culture; identify the challenges encountered in using mobile library services to promote a reading culture, and propose strategies for improving mobile library services for the development of a reading culture in the community. The study employed a case study research design and adopted a qualitative research approach. The purposive sampling method was used to select respondents (who included librarians and users) with in-depth information and knowledge relating to the topic under study. Data was collected using three methods: interviews, observation, and document review. The qualitative data were analyzed using frequencies and
percentages later summarized into interpretable organized themes in relation to the objectives of the study. Test-pretest method of data collection and data sources and piloting of instruments were used as data quality control strategies. The qualitative data was extensively scrutinized. The findings were that Sseppuuya Community Resource Centre provided book box/motorbike and mobile circulating services, storytelling, reading tents, reading on the streets, and games. The role of mobile library services in promoting reading culture faced various challenges like inadequate information materials/books, funds, mode of the mobile
library, language, and distance from Sseppuuya Community Resource Centre to different timetabled locations. In conclusion, the study observed that NSCRC’s contribution was not fully met due to various constraints. The study recommends that there is a need for government to support building solid structures and systems within and outside to improve the development of a reading culture in the community. This study has added literature on the role of mobile library services in promoting a reading culture. | en_US |
