An online student application system
Abstract
Universities use a selection system in order to ascertain students who qualify for admission. The system is based on examination results where students are screened according to their high school performance. An admission board that consists of the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Faculty Deans, Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development and the University Registrar does the selection. Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (FCIT) is one of Makerere University’s fastest growing faculties. Difficulty comes in when students have to make queues to hand in their applications; this may take a long time for them to get a reply. The main objective of this study was to develop an online system which provides a fast and convenient method for students to apply to the University. Various universities differ in restriction policies for example different entry requirements and different management of application records which are all aimed at selecting the right students for a particular course. The Online Student Application System enables prospective students to apply for a course at FCIT, informing the user whether they qualify for the available courses. This application was implemented using JSP/HTML programming languages and MySQL DBMS (Database Management Systems).
