Participation of students in co-curricular activities in private secondary schools Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the participation of students in co-curricular activities in private secondary schools Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District. The Research objectives were to establish the nature and status of co-curricular infrastructural facilities, the various co-curricular programs conducted in private secondary schools, and the role of the stakeholders in influencing students to participate in co-curricular activities. Another research objective was to identify the challenges faced in implementing Co-curricular activities in private secondary schools. The study employed descriptive survey research design. The study population consisted of Head teachers, Co-curricular teachers, Parents and Senior four (S.4) students from Private secondary schools in Wakiso District - Kasangati Town Council. The study used Simple random and Purposive sampling. The instruments used in data collection were questionnaires to students and CCA teachers, interview guide with head teachers, Government officials and parents. Observation checklist was also used. The study found out that there was low students participation in Co-curricular activities in private secondary schools. It was also found out that most of the private secondary schools had few Co-curricular programs and facilities, most of which were obsolete. The study established that funding, parental ignorance and lack of strict government monitoring and supervision were the major hindrance to students’ participation in Co-curricular activities. Based on the findings, it is recommended that, Government, parents and school administrators should work together to avail the budget and have enough co-curricular programs and facilities. Parents should be sensitised about the value of co-curricular activities. Teachers should be trained and Government should be strict on matters concerning Co-curricular Activities.
